Many of us look forward to Spring with great anticipation of fragrant flowers and warmer weather. But for many dedicated fans, Spring means but one thing . . . baseball’s celebrated Spring Training!

Jeanne,
No sports metaphors this time, just praise. This object, nay this icon, is painted with pure love. I might have been able to lay it down convincingly and even paint in a few scuff marks, but there is something more in this. The handling of light and shadow give it an astral feel, like a planet in some lost galaxy, its surface marred from untold meteors and asteroids. The chiaroscuro treatment, the blurring of the back edge of the ball at left and the subtle softness at the top and bottom edge, the stitches...all perfection!

Thank you so much, Mark!! Your artistic sensitivity is always evident as you articulate my very deliberate attention to detail which I lovingly dote upon in my paintings, particularly my baseballs! It's such a challenge to capture the spherical shape accurately with it's many nuances as the silhouette rises and falls over the laces, and blurs and crispens depending upon the light. I certainly can see your comparison to planetary surfaces in shadow and light and marred by meteors! It's always such a joy to hear your perspective. I truly appreciate your comments! Thank you! Jeanne

Lovely detail and lighting. I can practically feel the stitches and the scuffed leather.

Thank you, Diana! Those details are such fun to do! Textures are really my thing -- next to composition. In my "Little Gems" paintings I've been trying to create a bit more drama as well, so I'm glad you appreciated that. Thank you so much! Jeanne
