baseball well played, vintage, antique, old

5x5 inches / oil on panel
SOLD

This baseball has been played with well . . . and with it, many a game was well played! For most of us, baseball was a friendly, all inclusive game where every kid in the neighborhood gathered on the curb to pick teams. Our claim to fame was a single leftover bat from a boy’s Little League, a couple of mitts that we shared and used for second base in the middle of the street, and one worn out baseball. What made the game particularly interesting was the condition of the ball. It had been through a lot including being retrieved countless times by the skinniest boy who slinked down the swampy sewer to save the game in a rousing cheer of applause! We all recall the image of watching that wobbly pitch approaching, then hearing the ever familiar “twap, twap, twap” as it spun past with it’s “wing” hanging out and flapping in the breeze! Absolutely nothing could deter us in our quest . . . for a game well played!

We're all looking forward to Spring again, and for most of us that means flowers and birdsong! But for many dedicated fans, it means one thing, BASEBALL'S SPRING TRAINING!

Many of us look forward to Spring with great anticipation of fragrant flowers and warmer weather. But for many dedicated fans, Spring means but one thing . . . baseball’s celebrated Spring Training!

Baseball: Frayed Laces

Well used, this baseball reveals countless happy days when kids of every age tossed the neighborhood ball and ran the bases marked by a tree, lamp post, or even a sweatshirt tossed in a heap in the middle of the street as second base!

There is something we can all identify with when we see a baseball. It recalls memories of countless hours of fun as we played in the streets, the parks or the schoolyards.
It recalls the thrill of hearing the crack of the bat and feeling that impact as we made contact for the first time. It recalls the excitement of catching our first fly ball . . . of breaking in our first mitt. . . of the cheers from friends and family as we rounded the bases! So I celebrate those experiences here with a vintage baseball set in a much deserved place of honor, for the memories it recalls are priceless.

This painting is dedicated to my husband. Since we left New Jersey he’s felt very deprived as he can no longer pop over the river to Shea Stadium and watch his home team play! Yes, for all you baseball fans, that would be the New York Mets! While I am presenting a subject painted by several other artists this season, I thought I’d put a little “spin” on it (no pun intended) and place it in a classical setting as I typically do with my still life arrangements of fruit and flowers.
