soul and purpose

"Through my paintings I hope to communicate a personal enthusiasm and respect for the natural world, thus encourage in others an active stewardship of same." -- JEANNE ILLENYE

peach hollyhocks in chinese jar, peeling wallpaper, bird, antique books

24x12 inches / oil on canvas

Rich and elegant, this stately arrangement of old fashioned peach hollyhocks stands tall in a Chinese porcelain jar with shimmering goldleaf. Enhanced by a backdrop of peeling wallpaper, antique books and a Goldfinch figurine this composition becomes a visual tapestry. My objective here was not only to use a lighter, cooler backdrop but also to show all aspects of age within the floral subject, from bud to blossom to seed pod. See my artist statement to further understand my purpose. Again, my impatience with the camera and lighting is evident so I now see that all my labor intensive detailing such as the veins and creases in the tender petals, is lost in this particular image.
