What could better signify the emergence of the season than a plate of bright red strawberries swimming in a swirl of heavy cream! A delightful combination, here presented on a Spode plate for contrast and added brilliance in a red, white and blue combination . . . just in time for July 4th Independence Day!

While working on a commissioned painting of lemons in a classical arrangement, I found that I was particularly drawn to one corner of the painting, with it’s depth of shadows and reflective qualities on the bowl. Hence I decided to “lift” that corner and place it in a square format to contemporize it as illustrated here. A trademark characteristic of much of my work is an enhanced sense of time and age in my subjects such as this chipped antique porcelain bowl and dried, cut lemon.

This painting is dedicated to my husband. Since we left New Jersey he’s felt very deprived as he can no longer pop over the river to Shea Stadium and watch his home team play! Yes, for all you baseball fans, that would be the New York Mets! While I am presenting a subject painted by several other artists this season, I thought I’d put a little “spin” on it (no pun intended) and place it in a classical setting as I typically do with my still life arrangements of fruit and flowers.

If ever a person doubted the existence of heaven above, I would challenge them to paint a hummingbird’s egg. What incredible subtlety and pearl like qualities it has and such a lovely elongated shape with only two per nest for mother to nurture.
(Please note that I never take a nest from nature. I use photo reference and create a still life in my imagination whch I then portray as an oil painting.)

Arranged on a Spode plate is a small serving of fresh, perfectly ripe strawberries just for you. It’s really such fun to work the highlights around each individual seed as well as to capture the subtle translucency of the strawberry tips as they hang over the plate.

If you haven't seen as many of my "Little Gems" listed lately, it's because I've been working on this very large commissioned painting, now completed and presented here. While I have yet another large commissioned painting currently in progress, I will try to squeeze in some time to paint a few smaller works for my ebay listings as the various stages / glazes of the larger painting dry.
