Botanical illustrations and paintings have always been intriguing as they mark a particular point of development within the Natural world. Many botanicals display rare or now extinct species of flora and fauna. While my intention in this particular painting is less scientific and more deliberately a presentation of beauty, it nevertheless offers the same crisp, simple composition so often found in such historical recordings. Here the Mourning Cloak butterfly inspects a deeply cupped English rose touched with dewdrops.
