I'll post this to my "nothin' but pink" blog as well.

This month's theme was to use purple and yellow. As I only use the primaries plus white anyway, I could've painted ANY color in the spectrum as always. However, I interpreted the theme to be more restrictive and therefore mixed purple (French Ultramarine Blue + Cadmium Red) and kept it as such. My immediate decision was to mute the yellow (Cadmium Yellow) into an ochre (yellow+purple) and work from there.

There's something so irresistible about the voluptuous shapes of pears. While I typically don't interrupt that form as it is sheer perfection, I chose to provide a peek inside to reveal it's exquisite beauty within. The droplet delightfully repeats the subject's form, completing the classical lines of composition employing the concept of the "Hogarth Curve" even in a contemporary painting such as this. My classical training is always evident if one studies my work in detail.

Trio of Cherries on Wood Block

I decided that I needed to pull away from commissions and do a quickie for ebay. This was particularly quick...in fact, it surprised me that I was done, start to finish, in little more than an hour! Just goes to show that familiarity with one's subject helps accelerate the process, plus working on canvas moves much faster after working on smooth panels for so long. One thing I noticed during the process of this painting was that I lingered yet again on the wood knot and graining with some delight and almost felt like the cherries were an excuse to paint the block...like I needed to put something ON it. Perhaps I'll be daring someday and just paint wood....
