Over these past few years I've vowed to pursue my new direction and my true heart's desire, but my schedule would never permit. However, this past year I was able to at least begin with this painting, "Shades of White". After decades of painting various still life subjects, I've refined my preferences and plan to make a more concerted effort to paint my favorite things: billowy white blossoms, silver, lace, teacups, nests, country cottage style and more from my gardens and antique collections. Not only does the new year provide a fresh start, but it's also a time to reflect and bid thanks to all my wonderful art collectors!

     If you're a regular visitor to my blog and website, you've no doubt seen a good amount of blue & white porcelain and Spode Blue Italian transferware. It has been the single most popular subject requested by clients, and I love painting it, particularly since it's my everyday set...well, except in Winter when I switch to another Spode pattern in one of their Victorian Christmas collections...and my brown transferware, and various mulberry transferware patterns, and two patterns of the Autumnal Game Series. I digress, as my purpose for reposting this painting which I'd completed and sold many years ago, is to chat a little about Spode in general and introduce you to two fabulous sites.
     Recently, I was introduced online to Pam Woolliscroft who began collecting at an early age and confesses that she'd even purchase cracked or chipped pieces that were priced more appropriately for a teenager to begin collecting...a great idea. Of course I agree with this concept as a thing of beauty is not destroyed by what I've always referred to as the "kisses of time".   (You've seen how often I even paint cracks in my bowls for interest.)  Pam's early interest in Spode guided her toward a career as curator of the Spode Museum Trust as well as authoring a marvelous new blog which has been met with an overwhelming response, Spode History: Snippets of history relevant to the Spode pottery manufactory in Stoke-upon-Trent. It's a tremendously informative site with wonderful images and links. Additionally, Pam has begun Spode A-Z featuring a history of Spode patterns, no doubt a huge undertaking but one that will be quite enjoyable to watch grow.
     Another fellow Spode enthusiast whom I also met online is David Hoexter, web administrator of the Transferware Collectors Club which shares a passion for antique British transferware from 1760 to 1900. It's a truly vast site in which one could spend days at a time browsing the endless array of beautiful transferware, and even buy or sell to enhance your own collections. Another wonderful site which is a joint effort by the TCC and others to create an online Spode Exhibition.
     For those of us who are collectors, it's always delightful to make new acquaintances who share our appreciation of history and these beautiful wares, so I invite you to pop over and visit these wonderful sites and enjoy the tour!

This painting will be available in the upcoming "Let 'em Eat Cake" exhibit at Crooked Tree Gallery. At first I thought to paint the expected subject, cake or cookies. Then I thought to paint my mischievous kitty when she tippy toed across the buffet table, navigating through the crystal and silverware to sample one of my homemade cakes. (See the bottom on my pets blog.) However, that was too sentimental as I'd never want to part with it, so I finally landed on the idea to paint some of my favorite things with the teacakes playing a supporting role. I especially enjoyed painting the antique sterling spoons featuring Orange Blossom and Bridal Rose with all their lovely reflections including my red dining room. The cakestand is an old favorite in the Moon and Stars pattern. Most of my teacups feature flowers...no big surprise to those of you who follow my work! :o)

This was a commissioned painting with spoons from my client's collection which included a set of demitasse spoons she'd later regretted selling. Therefore, I added them into this composition so she'd still be in possession of them. What makes this set particularly unique is the engraving on the back, "Father". In all my years of collecting I've never seen this. Also, I added the letter "C" on the Whiting Lily patterned teaspoon to personalize it for her last name. The other two patterns are Grande Baroque and the darling angel is Watson Cherub.

Fulfilling my heart's desire with new, fresher, more mature still life oil paintings on the horizon

For many years I've painted from memory, something I've not liked to share too much as many folks don't quite understand what that means. It's simply been a vision in my mind's eye that I quickly wash onto canvas or panel, continuing to build refinement while sometimes referring to subjects in life or images for final detailing. However, as my inner voice has been calling me toward a new direction more representational of my true spirit, I've been impatient to fulfill this urge. Therefore, in the past two or three years as my garden shares it's bounty, I've been capturing nature's transient beauty in digital photographs to be referenced at a future date as time permits. In the midst of a photo shoot when creativity abounds, my desk becomes a cluttered mess of freshly cut garden blossoms, an array of vessels and other miscellaneous props. My photo shoots take a minimum of several hours as every nuance is adjusted frame by frame resulting in hundreds if not thousands of photos from which only a few will be selected as reference for oil paintings. These spectacular images are being reserved for larger, more refined paintings with a new freshness -- more mature work than you've seen from me in the past. Three of these new works will be included in the prestigious American Society of Traditional Artists National Museum Exhibit. These newest oil paintings are my true heart's desire.

Here's a tiny sneak peek showing a small detail of my latest floral still life oil painting. I rushed to complete it for submission to ASTA (American Society of Traditional Artists) a prestigious new group of truly spectacular realist masters. The founder and famed Ed Copley had seen my work online and invited me to apply. Happily, I've been accepted and this painting is one of many featured on their website under new members. I'll write more later, but since I'm backlogged with commission orders, I've been working overtime at my easel doing both still lifes and pet portraits so clerical work has been on the back burner. I'll be sharing more new work with you as I prepare for ASTA's upcoming National Museum Exhibit. Also as a little aside, I'd been invited along with several other Daily Painters, by Diana Botkin to contribute toward her recent article in "Artists" magazine. It was only a few brief years ago that I was intensely studying the methods of the Dutch masters, as exhibited here in this painting of my own imagination. These larger, complex compositions executed with intense detail took months to complete. I still adore these paintings not only for their beauty, but also because I dedicated so much of my life to each one, as opposed to my "Little Gems" for example, which at most take a few days to complete so I only seem to visit with them very briefly. However, I truly grew with these elaborate paintings which required such intense visualization and heavy reliance upon memory of my subjects, that I feel they are a part of me . . . or I am a part of them. I didn't actually have the luxury of a still life in front of me at that time so my tutorials were harder learned. Yet those self taught lessons have sunk in deeply as a result and everything I've done subsequently contains this underlying foundation. These paintings are where I really strove to hone my technical skills. It all began when I fell in love with a particular masterpiece (will show at future post) and naively mentioned to a friend how I wondered if I could actually paint like that. Her surprisingly off-handed response, "Sure you can," is what prompted the challenge, and it was the best step I could've taken with my art. Now, as I'm changing direction, or more accurately, as my sensitivities are piqued in other aspects and a directional change is slowly becoming more evident in the newest work on my easels, I'm turning a glimpse backward to see my progress. The joy of having a career like this is that it will forever entertain my eyes, my hand, my mind and my heart as I strive to improve my work while serving as a vessel to interpret and capture nature's transient beauty.

. . . and as I’ve mentioned it before, here’s the painting that resides over my desk and is reflected in those big silver spoons. What I intended when creating this painting some years ago, was to establish an old world sense of warmth and charm. There are two sides of me really, one that loves the ornate and another that loves rustic. This painting is actually framed in an ornate goldleaf frame which satisfies both desires.

There is a glare no matter how I tried to reduce the effects of the bright sunlight relfecting off the snow, plus it's a little blurry but you know me . . . Thought it might be fun to share a sneak peek at a work in progress which is a commissioned painting of sterling silver teaspoons similar to my first version of 5x7 inches, but here they are painted larger than life at 16x12 inches. At first I wasn’t so sure about going that large as I typically prefer my subjects lifesized or smaller, but once I did the layout I was excited. I’m so impatient about getting these spoons done but the dry time between sittings is slow. I’m aiming to complete the last two handles, which are of course the most detailed being the Lily and Orange Blossom patterns, then final detailing overall. More to come . . . .

The creamy white feather with tints of gold is silky and the brown feather is downy soft. Surprisingly, we didn’t see the usual flocks of turkeys this past season. We do always enjoy their antics as they strut and cluck up the driveway and move in waves all around the property sampling my garden and cleaning up under the bird feeders. Perhaps they’ll grace us with their presence next year....

Come the first of Spring I marvel at their twining vines and complex little blossoms, but by late Summer when they've run rampant and nearly snuffed out everything in their path, I want to cut them all down. Alas, they always win my heart over again in Spring.

Several years ago we planted a small border of old fashioned roses, one of which being the sweetly blushing Bonica featured here in glowing beauty set against the soft, nearly turquoise blue sky with slight wisps of clouds. As I captured this rose in mid-morning, dewdrops still clung to it's delicate petals. This particular painting is a very small peek into what's to come this year with my new direction! Having been so immersed in my pet portrait commissions (see other blog) I've been watching Autumn go by from my studio windows! The leaves changed and fell before I could grab them for a painting, the berries on all the shrubs have been eaten by the birds and deer, and the raspberry and grape leaves have turned color and dropped way before I even got outside! This is my favorite season second only to Spring and yet I've been unable to submerge myself into it as planned. Therefore, when I received a request from a client to revisit this theme, I was inspired. Maybe I'll venture outside tomorrow to see what remains of the seasonal color so that I may share some more still lifes with you in the coming weeks.

On Painting in Zen

"For me it most noticeably occurred about 15 years ago with the creation of the most challenging paintings of my life, my huge, elaborate florals. The process was so intense and required so much mental energy it was peculiarly more work than studying differential equations or chemistry. Those paintings took months to complete as I taught myself how to grow to a new level. What is that Zen feeling for me? Where time is incalculable...observation and skill merge into a spiritual experience. Hurdles are long forgotten and I seem to be in a comfortable plateau in terms of color mixing, composition, balance, etc. The tea kettle boils dry...the promise of only a few minutes at my easel soon brings the realization six hours later that it's 3AM...the insatiable desire to keep recording ideas on panels that stack up by the dozens in my studio before I can find time to get back to them...the meditative state that occurs every time I sit at my easel...I call it auto pilot...the ability to tune out...the familiarity of spending so much solitary time in deep concentration. Only the jarring sound of a phone or the undeniable sweetness of birdsong or fluttering wings splashing in the birdbath can pull me away momentarily from my easel...before my work once again beckons. It's a spiritual experience which I hope my work someday lives up to. Right now I'd say the richness of the process actually exceeds the results...but I'm working on that...." This painting is reminiscent of an old world ambience and implies a romantic story of a languid day apple picking, perhaps laying in the long, cool grass while selecting those without bruises (which I always love to add to show transience in nature) and sampling the harvest. With attempting to follow the trend away from classical realism toward contemporary realism, I'd abandoned so much of my work, this included, until Alex Perez requested a painting for his gallery's fall show. The theme was yellow, black and white. This image is showing a tad bit warmer on my pc but I was rushed for the photo. For yellow I used 2 luscious warm hues: Cadmium-Barium Yellow Medium (a uniquely reddish orange/yellow) and Yellow Ochre (a deep, smoothly opaque neutral gold); as well as a cool Zinc Yellow (a favorite for enlivening a work). For black I mixed French Ultramarine Blue (a classic standby) and Raw Umber (another old reliable hue) and of course Titanium White.

This is my interpretation of this month's theme: Yellow Flower / Blue Vase

I was running ever so late as my painting was due by noon yesterday, yet I'd not even gone into the garden until 3:30 PM. I spied some yellow lilies deep in the overgrown masses of blooms yet I could only reach this one so had to get quite creative! Quickly I shot some photos with various vessels but since I paint in oils in the classical tradition without added drying agents, etc. I knew it would indeed be a challenge with such a time constraint! My best bet, I determined, was to fall back to an old favorite, Spode Blue Italian, my everyday dishes. As physically fatiguing on my hand as it was to "rush" such details, I nevertheless completed the painting in a matter of hours with some refinement added today. A little out of season for St. Patrick's Day when in New York City for the parade we all wear tee shirts, hats, etc. that proudly display, "Kiss Me I'm Irish". However, as I just realized that I'd had this one in my pile of paintings I thought I'd offer it. Search my blog for the first version on this theme as well as many pink kisses which I've done on a custom basis, although so often I don't get to post them all to my blog. In any event, I don't think one needs to wait until St. Patrick's Day to say, "Kiss Me I'm Irish!"

Two variations on a theme of apples and lace. Both available for purchase. The painting shown on the left was created first, while the other was inspired by same adding a little more visual tension in the proportions of the canvas. It's hard to say which I prefer. The antique cloth embroidered wtih blue floss on the right is particularly enchanting especially with the little curl at the end, while the simplicity and rich color dominate the mood of the painting on the left. Which is your favorite?

Brief reprieve after long flurry of orders, birthdays, holidays. Vowed to enjoy pool this year rather than always painting! FINALLY pruned some of my 65+ shrubs many 5-8 feet, gardens sufferring with near tornado winds, hydrangeas heavy burdened with blooms, roses flourishing, sweet peas scrambling everywhere, cut some for porch and painting. INCREDIBLE pics of my peonies. Hope I get caught up on orders to paint all I've planned!

Originally this painting was to be on a high gloss table, but when my client requested a doilie which coincided with this month's group topic of linens, I delighted in adding a bit of antique lace to this composition. For years I've had ribbons floating around in my collection of reference materials here in my studio, so when my client requested a green ribbon be included, I couldn't wait to experiment with the trasluscent qualities of this lovely sheer ribbon. Guaranteed, I'm sure to use these subjects again since it was such fun!
